Disasters affect communities and countries differentially, based on their level of preparedness and resilience. Preparedness, recovery and development go together; creating a need for a comprehensive framework. The SEEDS Network believes in the concept of growth with resilience. It holds combined expertise in humanitarian response, creation of community-based platforms, disaster education, research training, planning, technology innovations and communications. It has worked across 15 countries in Asia; and has reached out further through partnerships with other networks. With a philosophy to work small, but in depth; it creates big impacts through replication or adoption of policy. SEEDS works collaboratively to help build disaster-resilient and sustainable communities!
As a humanitarian organisation that works with vulnerable communities, SEEDS has reached out to families affected by earthquakes, floods, cyclones and drought. It also works to create and empower local multi-stakeholder groups that are key to strengthening community based programmes. These groups help bridge the knowledge gap, bringing the civil society together to act on climate and disaster threats and advocate with local government.
Adopting a unique architectural perspective, SEEDS works to find practical solutions and sets trends on innovative disaster-resilient technologies. This includes houses as well as broader habitat situations. It also works hands-on with local masons and construction workers to develop the skills and know-how for safe community architecture; and promotes action-based research on traditional construction technologies.
SEEDS works with the formal and non-formal educational entities to enhance knowledge, interest, desire and actions on risk reduction. It provides teachers training and conducts policy dialogue on disaster education; engaging school children and communities to develop innovations on risk reduction education. It also conducts research on core focus areas, including climate stresses.
The field research and work done by SEEDS’ teams is complemented by academic research carried out by renowned centres.
SEEDS works on novel approaches to planning, capacity building and training in the climate change and disaster sphere. It works to train government officials, field practioners, local leaders and communities on disaster risk reduction, effective response, life saving skills and climate adaptation. It also works with governments and other concerned stakeholders to develop disaster management plans at the local, district, state and national levels.
The innovative humanitarian communications cuts across all projects; helping organisations spark positive change. Whether it’s to document, evaluate, inform, advocate or involve people in a cause. Simple tools, stories and awareness materials are created to break down complex ideas. Various mediums are used including words, design, images, new media, infographics and videos.
Advocacy and networking among practitioners and with governments is essential for knowledge transfer, policy reform and scaling up. Critical mass cannot be achieved by one organisation alone. Collaboration is required within and among nations and all teams are committed to this agenda.
